SchoolWalden University NP practicum: hours, Meditrek, and preceptor policy.
Walden nurse practitioner students complete 640 supervised clinical hours across four practicum courses, 160 hours each, with every application and hour logged in Meditrek. Here is exactly how the requirement works, and how we help Walden students meet it.

How many practicum hours does a Walden NP program require?
For students in catalog years beginning Spring 2018 or later, every master's-level NP specialization at Walden requires a minimum of 640 hours of supervised clinical practicum, completed across four practicum courses at 160 hours each (Walden University, Practicum Requirements: NP Programs). This was an increase from the earlier standard of 144 hours per course (576 total), so older catalog years and third-party summaries that still cite 576 hours are out of date for current students.
The 640-hour total holds across Walden's five NP tracks. The practicum runs alongside the didactic course in a paired structure, written in the catalog as the didactic prefix plus the practicum prefix (the NRNP course paired with its PRAC practicum component).

Pacing rules: weeks and daily hour caps
Walden does not let you compress a practicum into a few long shifts. The hours in each course are spread over a minimum number of weeks so you see a broad range of patients, and a daily cap limits how much you can log in one day (Walden University, Practicum Requirements: NP Programs).
- Minimum 8 weeks per practicum course. Hours should be completed over no fewer than 8 weeks unless prior approval is granted for extenuating circumstances.
- Daily maximum of 12 practicum hours. You cannot log more than 12 hours in a single day.
- Different preceptors and sites when doubling courses. If you take two practicum courses in one term, Walden requires a separate preceptor and site for each.
What is Meditrek, and how does it work?
Meditrek (a product of HSoft Corporation) is the online system Walden uses to apply for, track, and manage the practicum experience (Walden University, Requirements for Success in Practicum Courses). It is the equivalent role that CORE ELMS plays at other schools: it is the system of record for your application, your site and preceptor, and your logged hours.
A complete practicum application must be submitted through Meditrek by Walden's published application deadline, well before the term you intend to start clinical hours. The Office of Field Experience then reviews the application and works with the site to put an Affiliation Agreement in place (a legal agreement between Walden University and your practicum site) before you are cleared to begin (Walden University, Practicum Application and Approval Process).
Because all four conditions must be true, students who line up a preceptor late often lose a full term. The application and agreement timeline, not the hours themselves, is what most commonly delays Walden NP students.
Walden's preceptor policy: who finds your preceptor?
The student does. At Walden, you are responsible for identifying a practicum site and making first contact with a qualified preceptor. The process begins with the student identifying a site and initiating contact with a potential preceptor who meets the knowledge, education, skill, and certification qualifications required for that course (Walden University, Field Experience Student Resources).
Walden's Office of Field Experience supports the process by reviewing your submission and establishing the Affiliation Agreement directly with the site administrator, but the university does not assign or guarantee a preceptor to you. The legwork of finding a clinician who will take you, in the right specialty and setting, falls to the student. This is the same wall Capella students hit, which is why we serve both.
How we help Walden NP students get placed
Capella is our primary focus, but the practicum requirement and the paperwork are nearly identical at Walden, so we place Walden students nationwide too. We work the part that stalls most students: finding a verified, qualified preceptor in your specialty and setting, then keeping the documentation correct from application through final hours.
In-person and virtual
Local matching for hands-on specialties, or a complete virtual practicum by video where your specialty and Walden's policy allow it, documented to your program system.

FAQ
How many clinical hours does a Walden NP program require?
A minimum of 640 hours for catalog years Spring 2018 and later, completed across four practicum courses at 160 hours each. Earlier catalogs required 144 hours per course (576 total), so confirm your own catalog year.
What is Meditrek used for at Walden?
Meditrek is Walden's online system to apply for, track, and manage the practicum. You submit your application through it, and you log and track your clinical hours there once your application is approved.
When can I start logging practicum hours?
Only after your application is fully approved in Meditrek, you are enrolled in the practicum course, it is on or after the first day of the term, and your Walden faculty instructor has approved you to begin.
Does Walden find a preceptor for me?
No. You are responsible for identifying the site and securing a qualified preceptor. Walden's Office of Field Experience reviews your application and sets up the Affiliation Agreement with the site, but does not assign a preceptor.
Do you really place Walden students?
Yes. Capella is our primary focus, but the practicum requirement is the same kind of wall at Walden, so we place Walden NP students nationwide, in person or virtual, with the paperwork handled.
