Herzing NP practicum hours by specialty

Herzing delivers its nurse practitioner coursework online and completes the practicum in person at an approved clinical site. The total supervised clinical hours "range from approximately 540 to 630 or more hours" depending on the specialization and entry pathway (Herzing, Nurse Practitioner Clinicals). The table below pulls the published totals from each program page so you can plan against the right number.

Herzing NP programTotal creditsClinical / practicum hours
BSN to MSN, Family NP (FNP)48 credits585 hours
RN to MSN, Family NP (FNP)varies by pathway~630 hours
Post-Master's Certificate, FNPvaries585 hours
BSN to MSN, Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP)48 credits540 hours
BSN to MSN, Adult-Gerontology Primary Care NP (AGPCNP)48 credits540 hours

The BSN to MSN-FNP track states "a minimum of 48.00 semester credit hours and 585 practicum hours are required for graduation," with "a minimum of 100 patient encounters and 135 clinical hours" inside its clinical courses (Herzing, MSN-FNP Program). The PMHNP and AGPCNP programs each publish "540 clinical hours," including "a 180-hour, 16-week immersion experience" (Herzing, MSN-PMHNP; Herzing, MSN-AGPCNP). Always confirm your own total in your Graduate Catalog cohort, since pathway and specialty change the figure.

Who finds the preceptor and site at Herzing

This is the part that surprises most incoming NP students. Herzing does not hand you a placement by default. The university "encourages students to take an active role in identifying and securing their own clinical sites," and asks you to find "a clinical site and preceptor that align with your program's population focus and course objectives" (Herzing, NP Clinicals).

You are not entirely on your own. Two roles support the search:

  • Clinical Placement Advisor, who guides you through the placement process and deadlines.
  • Clinical Coordinator, a master's- or doctorally-prepared nurse who can offer coaching calls and, if you stall after contacting multiple sites, "a list of potential clinical sites within your area."

Herzing's APRN Clinical Placement Pledge adds a backstop: "If, after completing all required steps, you are still unable to secure your placement, we will step in and secure it for you" (Herzing, Clinical Placement Pledge and Guidance Process). Read the conditions carefully. That pledge applies only after you follow the full Clinical Guidance Process, meet every placement deadline, and begin the formal placement effort well ahead of your application deadline, and it is governed by "terms and conditions as outlined in the Graduate Catalog." In practice, the early legwork of contacting sites and lining up a willing preceptor still falls to you.

Documents and approvals before clinical starts

Herzing will not let you begin clinical hours until your site and preceptor are approved. "All sites and preceptors must be approved before attending any clinical throughout the entirety of your program," and approval status must be received before the course start date (Herzing, NP Clinicals). The submission package is short but specific:

Required itemWhat it confirms
Online clinical applicationOpens the placement file and routes it for review.
Resume (current student status)Shows you are an enrolled Herzing graduate nursing student.
Preceptor's CVVerifies the preceptor's credentials and scope for your population focus.
Signed preceptor agreementConfirms the preceptor has agreed to supervise your hours.

Because every site and preceptor needs review and an approval status before the course begins, the timeline matters more than the paperwork. Start the search a full term ahead. A preceptor who agrees verbally still has to return a signed agreement and a CV, and a site may need its own internal sign-off before Herzing can approve it.

How the hours are scheduled and counted

Herzing notes that many NP students average "approximately 10 to 12 hours per week" of clinical time across 8- or 16-week course formats (Herzing, NP Clinicals). At that pace, a 540-hour program represents a sustained, multi-term commitment, not something you compress into a few weeks. A few planning points that follow from the published structure:

  • The PMHNP and AGPCNP tracks build a 180-hour immersion into the back of the program, so your final terms carry the heaviest clinical load.
  • FNP students track both hours and patient encounters (a minimum of 100 encounters in the clinical courses), so your preceptor's patient volume affects how fast you accrue.
  • Only supervised hours at an approved site count. Hours logged before approval, or with an unapproved preceptor, do not.
  • You "identify a schedule" in collaboration with your preceptor, so a preceptor who can offer consistent weekly availability keeps you on pace better than one who can only fit you in sporadically.

Herzing and Capella: the same practicum wall

Capella is our primary focus, and the two programs are not identical: Capella NP tracks run a minimum of 750 practicum hours and log them in CORE ELMS (Capella, MSN-FNP courses), while Herzing's NP totals sit in the 540 to 630 range. But the obstacle is the same at both schools. The coursework is online, the clinical hours are real and in person, and the student is responsible for securing an approved preceptor and site before the clock starts. That is the wall students hit, and it is the same wall whether the page header says Capella or Herzing.

Common questions

How many clinical hours does a Herzing NP program require?

It depends on specialty and entry pathway. Herzing states total supervised clinical hours range from approximately 540 to 630 or more. The BSN to MSN-FNP requires 585 practicum hours, the RN to MSN-FNP about 630, and the PMHNP and AGPCNP tracks 540 each.

Does Herzing find my preceptor and site for me?

Herzing expects you to take an active role in identifying and securing your own site and preceptor. Advisors and coordinators support the search, and under the APRN Clinical Placement Pledge Herzing will step in to secure a placement if you complete all required steps and still cannot, subject to deadlines and Graduate Catalog terms.

What documents do I need before starting a Herzing clinical?

An online clinical application plus a resume showing current student status, your preceptor's CV, and a signed preceptor agreement. All sites and preceptors must be approved before you attend any clinical, with approval received prior to the course start.

How many patient encounters does the FNP program require?

The BSN to MSN-FNP program requires a minimum of 100 patient encounters and 135 clinical hours within its clinical courses, as part of the 585 total practicum hours. The RN to MSN-FNP pathway carries a higher encounter count.

Are Herzing NP clinicals online or in person?

Coursework is delivered online, but the supervised practicum hours are completed in person at an approved clinical site with an approved preceptor in your specialty's population focus.
